At 11.30pm on October 11, 1975, a fierce band of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live (1975). Matt Wood stars as John Belushi on Saturday Night, see the rest of the cast and their real-life counterparts. Dan Aykroyd was the only SNL cast member to read the script. If you didn’t grow up watching SNL or know nothing about the OG cast or how SNL started, you’re going to be incredibly confused, lost, and bored. I think that’s the problem I have with this movie is that you have to know who everyone is from the beginning of SNL. Lots of naming and name dropping and no stories, if you go in wanting to watch a movie that will explain it to you… this isn’t it and you’ll most likely walk out. So it really puts the category of viewers quite small.
Most people would have no idea
I grew up watching SNL (but in the Sandler, Farley, Spade, Farrell era). If it wasn’t for my dad being obsessed with the beginning of the older SNL and always having it on, I would have hated it. My husband grew up on MadTV and although some big names like Belushi, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd from the movies, he had no idea who anyone else was. We had to come home and watch the first episode and I had to explain a lot of things he didn’t understand. Like the relationship with Lorne and his wife and the Aykroyd connection there. I will say the casting is AWESOME, I laughed at some parts, although I think it had the potential to be a little funnier. It is not at all inaccurate as some people say. Most of the things were true, only some things didn’t happen that night.
You really felt like you were sinking
The actors did absolutely amazing and the 70’s atmosphere and filming style was great. I felt a bit stressed, I don’t even drink and left thinking “I need a drink, I feel like I’ve just had a tiring day at work”. I recommend watching the first episode beforehand. go if you haven’t seen him in a while. They absolutely pull off some scenes, it’s unusual. Unfortunately, I think this movie will bomb, but they really did a bad job of making it watchable for anyone who is now considered a “boomer”; age or close to. A lot of people in that category don’t watch movies in theaters much anymore, they’re dead or they’re stuck in their Jesus ways now, they’re going to be offended by things they probably weren’t in 1975. Obviously, some people in that category will love, but I’d guess they might be far and few between.
I’ve never seen him do that in a movie, so I know he’s bored
You might enjoy doing some research on the beginning of SNL first and knowing what it all looked like, but it’s a lot of work to ask of viewers. I don’t recommend seeing it in theaters, if you really think you might be lost, you will be. I honestly think I myself, if I had watched it from home, would have been distracted. My husband and I were the only ones in the theater, no one else, and I caught him scrolling through his phone a few times. So I don’t give it 10/10 for the casting and acting and it did a great job of capturing the era.
