Maurice and Katia Krafft dedicated their lives to exploring the world’s volcanoes. Their legacy consists of groundbreaking scenes of explosions and their aftermath composed in this visually stunning collage.. Some scenes were so stunning I had to watch twice. I particularly enjoyed the Kyrie duet from Bach’s Bminor Mass with its erupting volcanism and larval flow, which gave off an unexpectedly beautiful feel. Later we hear excerpts from Verdi’s Requiem, but not the most famous bits! We don’t learn much about what motivates Katia and Maurice Kraft because of the documentary’s charm, the volcanoes, because it gives the viewer a chance to rummage instead. Narrative gives a lot of space. Some of the spoken words are fantastic. A masterpiece that I feel very privileged to have seen.
