Hugh Grant ventures into the dense world of theological debate by addressing themes rarely addressed in mainstream films. However, as I watched, I found myself struggling with an elusive question: Was The Heretic a compelling film or just an ambitious attempt that failed?
Grant’s performance is engaging but lacks an intangible quality, something that keeps the film from fully resonating
Perhaps it is Grant himself, who did not quite give up his familiar charm to be a character full of philosophical conflicts. Alternatively, it could be a script that seems torn between a story with a profound message and an indulgent lecture via Grant.
The supporting cast did an excellent job in the rather difficult roles they played alongside the lead Grant
This identity crisis leaves the film somewhat ungrounded, making The Heretic a fascinating watch, but ultimately difficult to categorize as either entirely successful or flawed.
