When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The things Cardinal Lawrence and the other priests do during the film’s conclave process are in line with Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican declares the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant. The papal apartment is sealed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with a wax papal seal. The College of Cardinals is housed in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae, or Saint Martha’s House) to eat and sleep between votes. The windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections take place and the votes are cast, are blacked out, bolted, and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave.

Edward Berger takes a process as intimate and sacred as the conclave and turns it into something gripping that echoes the sly, back-door nature and intrigue of Game of Thrones and Succession, while feeling surprisingly timely.
The Conclave is a film about choosing the candidate of least resistance to undo decades of progress
The Conclave is a carefully constructed, behind-the-scenes thriller where religion and politics collide, and the souls of petty men are tested for a chance at supreme power. Hmm… sounds familiar. Not to get too political, but there’s a reason this film was released when it was, and the overall challenging messages it conveys couldn’t be more relevant to the current political climate, not just in the US but in many other countries around the world. .I see a lot of pleasantly strange inbox/social media reviews saying this is a funny movie about priestly gossip (“What if that Gossip Girl episode took place entirely in the Vatican??????”), and that’s not untrue, but it also fails to mention that it’s a very serious and deeply moving picture of the tension of faith, the desperate search for certainty, and the true purpose of the church in the world. It’s the kind of well-staged "men in rooms" drama that feels like it could have been made in the 1940s or 90s.
This is Conclave
Imagine an Aaron Sorkin movie (The Social Network, Moneyball, A Few Good Men) set in the Catholic Church. The ensemble is outstanding, with Ralph Fiennes giving a performance that’s as nuanced as it is commandingly powerful. The tense atmosphere is heightened by a pulsating score and immersive sound design, though moments of over-the-top levity occasionally break the tension, adding an unexpected layer of entertainment to this gripping, high-stakes election. It’s one of the most stunning, impeccably crafted films of the year—a masterclass in classic Hollywood filmmaking, brilliantly directed by Edward Berger, who last made All Quiet on the Western Front.
