Anora, a young Brooklyn sex worker, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch
IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers quick summaries of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, curiously erotic Misericordia. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, director Sean Baker played various sex positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to demonstrate to the actors what he wanted to do.

The setup is appealing. Mikey Madison plays the lead, a New York dancer.
Then the story draws us in
She unwisely marries (the immature young son of a Russian oligarch) and then finds herself in a terrible bind. There is one standout performance from Madison, but all the performances are good.
The stunning locations – Las Vegas and Coney Island in the off-season – are skillfully captured
The excess of nudity and sex is not fashionable for a mainstream picture, but both this and the high drama – increasingly comic – have a rare vibe. At over two hours, it’s too long, but it almost holds our attention because we can’t imagine how it’s going to end.
The conclusion is not a disappointment
The London Film Festival screenings sold out, and I’m not surprised. The full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall is dynamic stuff from a fearless director.
