Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and didn’t begin developing it again until 2019
Chronology
The city of Nova Roma is pitted against Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who champions a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, her loyalties divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved, in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and doing table reads with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicted” the attacks.

The security footage of Cicero entering Cesar’s office is supposedly from two different cameras, as indicated by the small text in the upper left corner. Hamilton Crassus III: What Do You Think of This Boner I Got?. The “Ultimate IMAX Experience” version of the film features a live actor asking questions during the filmed press conference. Referenced on The John Campea Show: Adam Driver will lead Francis Ford Coppola’s new film, Megalopolis (2022).

However, what a heinous nightmare; or perhaps a fever dream would be more accurate. There’s no doubt that the actual set of ideas that make up Francis Ford Coppola’s “masterpiece” are incredibly unique and interesting. The problem is the execution of those ideas and the dialogue that connects them.
That said, I’ll probably watch Megalopolis again, just to make sure the experience was truly exhausting
I’m obsessed with the idea of New Rome and all these quasi-Roman characters conspiring against each other like a Shakespearean Game of Thrones. But hearing Adam Driver quote Hamlet and then immediately say “no clurrrrb” and Jon Voight say “horny” is simply unforgivable. I understand the plot of Megalopolis roughly, but I can’t even begin to understand why any of the characters do what they say or do. The amount of talent that was wasted on what must be one of the most beautiful and visually stunning settings is disrespectfully confusing.
