Chronology
After the death of her mother, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist and her boyfriend decide to travel to Cambodia to find out more about her past, only to encounter strange events inside the building that hint at something darker going on among the residents. Overall, there’s a lot to like here. One of the strongest features is a really nice and immersive setting with many interrelated parts that fit together well. Starting with the background of the mother’s death under mysterious circumstances Living in a community from which she was long gone, this provides the means to find out the reason for her return and also gives enough background to each other.
This setting helps the film become much more fun as the threatening instincts begin to materialize
Since we are aware of the relationship presented and how it affects it, the desire to contact everyone when they arrive to understand the reason is a natural part of meeting them. It also makes the presence of community behavior and rituals seem like the perfect choice to reinforce this type of story, as it appears in charming ways before gradually appearing darker and more menacing. This creates a fantastic sense of menacing fear the longer they stay in the community, and increasing danger leads to more emotion. When the low-key nature revolves around the benevolent, if slightly crooked behavior of the community, or simply noticing the ritual ornaments left behind, this is good enough to serve the film until it gets to the more open-ended sequences later on.

The big episode unfolds as a kind of bizarre meal preparation, as family members and other people he’s met in the community perform a ritual ceremony designed to prepare him for a special occult ritual that soon turns into a feverish nightmare. can’t tell his dream from reality is quite impressive. He kicks off this finale with a much darker genre venture that includes several revelations about his visions, leading to a wild ending where the dark origins of the ceremony are revealed as it’s about bringing a new spirit into the host’s body, which is again more restrained than expected, but still manages to deliver some generally chilling visuals and chases around the combination. All of that counts for a lot here, because while there aren’t too many downsides, there are a number of issues that come up.

Since the first half is far more ominous and understated than anything else, there isn’t much in the way of revealing what’s going on, preferring to focus on the eerie atmosphere of the building and their menacing demeanor to create the scares almost exclusively. As a result, almost nothing is revealed about what the community is trying to do, what their rituals entail, or how it should all be done, so very little is brought to light. It’s only at the end that everything comes together, so it’s possible that this will be a bit confusing at first to figure out what’s going on. Another downside is that this setup also makes for a pretty slow first half, with very little going on other than setting up plot points that pay off in the finale, so it takes a while to get the hang of it.
